Runs Hot & Won't Stop

This drive enclosure was just responsible for killing my backup disk drive. The enclosure was always hot to the touch which is not a good environment for hard drives. Enclosures with fans dissipate heat better, and I would recommend them over this model. Probably the biggest problem I had with this enclosure was the fact that the drive in it was always spinning. It never stopped unless the entire system or the disk was powered down. That's a sign of bad firmware and is yet another reason to skip this product.

Excellent external drive enclosure

In my work, I often need to use hard drives in exteral enclosures. It's amazing how much variance there can be in such an essentially simple device. The Adaptec ACS-100 is one of the best that I've used and I now own several.

The design is excellent. Practical rather than burdened with silly twists and curves. The supplied mount allows the unit to be positioned vertically or horizontally. The power brick is somewhat on the large side, but the enclosure, power adapter and USB cable fit into a one gallon ZipLoc bag if you need to travel with them.

Internally, the Adaptec is among the few that is guaranteed to work with IDE drives of up to 1 TB. I've used it with 750 GB drives and it works perfectly. Drives fit snugly into the case which is an asset. There are, by the way, two small tabs on the front edge of the case. You have to push the drive back a little to get into the case without breaking the tabs.

The two screws securing the case are set into the body, the only thing I don't like about the unit.\

Several people here have worried about heat dissipation. I'm not sure why. I frequently have to leave these drives running for days at a time with the drives spinning. I've encountered no overheating problems.

The enclosures are overpriced, but you're paying for the Adaptec name and, quite frankly, for quality you will not find in many lesser units.

Great little case!

I originally purchased this case to hold an inexpensive (Best Buy was having an amazing sale) 250 GB Hard Drive. It was a breeze to set up, my computer recognized it as soon as I installed the Western Digital software, and have not had a problem since. It has a cool blue light on the front that turns purple when it is reading or writing information ... very neat. It does get slightly warm to the touch, but that seems normal for a hard drive. I've been running it almost non-stop for about a year now, and it still amazes me how well it works. If you have technical know-how and are not afraid of setting up a hard drive, this is the drive for you.

Keeps disconnecting from my iMac

I bought this unit to house a 250Gb Seagate drive -- I wanted to set this up to do auto backups of my iMac. However, the unit will not stay connected to my computer for more than a day. I get this error message: "Device Removal. The device you removed was not properly put away. Data might have been lost or damaged. Before you unplug your device, you must first select its icon in the Finder and choose Eject from the File menu". When I power cycle the external HD, the device reattaches. Not a very good solution for automatic backups since it randomly detaches from my computer.

The unit does look nice and it's an easy install.
