Product Description:

This i-Series external drive enclosure from CP Technologies (model CP-UE-308) lets you create convenient, easily stackable external storage from your internal hard drives. You'll enjoy fast, easy access to the resulting external drives via high-speed USB 2.0 connections (USB 1.1 compatible), delivering data transfers at up to 480 Mbps. A built-in, quiet-cool fan protects your drives.

The plug-and-play enclosure installs with ease, and it's hot-swappable, too, so you'll be able to switch out drives with plug-and-play convenience. The enclosure even features a pop-out front bezel to cover a hard drive or, by removing it, to install a CD drive.

The enclosure supports wake-up ability and power down mode and USB suspend indicator. It complies with ATA/ATP-6 specification revision 1.0, supports 8- and 16-bit standard PIO-mode interfaces, and supports both 16-bit multi-word DMA mode and Ultra DMA mode interface(Ultra 33/66/100). The enclosure is compatible with both PC (Windows 98, 98SE 2000, ME, and XP) and Macintosh (MAC OS 9 or greater) computers.

works ok

Once I found out how to open the thing from other reviews on this site, it works okay.

The instructions that come with it are good enough to use for toilet paper if you ran out and don't have time to go to the store.

The IDE cable to the hard drive could be shortened a bit. If you don't screw the hard drive in, the IDE cable falls into the fan and makes funky noises. If you screw the hard drive in, the IDE cable gets bunched up. I found if you let the plugged in IDE cable go up and then away from the HDD, it makes it run ok without the loud fan noises that other people complained about. (The IDE cable then goes up back, hangs over the controller/circuit board, then comes back again overlapping itself and down and plugs into the HDD.)

The corner pieces that hold the thing together are cheap. I broke two of them while trying to figure out the best way to get the HDD in so the fan didn't make a horrendous noise.

Good alternative for the price

This host for internal disk does the job. It is easy to operate (after you manage to understand how to open the box) and perform well. I have 2 of these external disks boxes for more than a year now and did not have any issue with them. The only reason I gave it only 4 stars is that in one of the boxes the vent does not work and it gets very hot (although it does not impact the operation of the disk)

Simple and easy to use

Simply pull the four corner pieces off to pop in the drive. I love the screwless design. I bring this with me and can pop in and out drives exceptionally quickly.
The construction on the outside is fine. On the inside everything seems top quality and isn't that what counts?

Cheap useless junk

Don't buy this product, really.

The 2-page xerox copy of some old printout that you get for "manual" is worthless. The product is worthless. Using 2 separate Windows XP machines with this product, in a matter of several days I've experienced the following:
a) OS crashes.
b) multiple screen freezes
c) multiple Windows Explorer freezes or crashes.
d) parts of files written to this drive which made drive unusable untill I ran CHKDSK utility
e) on one computer this drive assumes responsibility of automatic Windows backup every time I turn it on, and basically locks 90% of all resources of the machine until it is done. No software or tool to disable this behavior. On the other machine it is fine.

This is worthless, untested product, 0 stars. Save yourself hours that I wasted, and spend extra $10 on something better.

Once you learn how to open it you're ok

I didn't expect a lot for the money I spent. The performance is very good. The fan set up and design is good. Learning how to open it is the trick. The corners need to be carefully pried off with a butter knife. The hard drive needs to be set to master via the jumpers. Once that is done there should be no reason to install the drivers that come with it if you are running XP. If you want a drive that you plan to run all the time you may consider spending more on a better looking drive.
